Mathematics is now an essential ingredient to so many academic fields. How do we make students aware of the opportunities that will become available to them if they major in mathematics? How do we structure the major to make it more attractive and useful to students who are planning careers outside of academic mathematics?

Accepting a student into a graduate program represents a considerable departmental investment. What strategies should be in place to make that a successful investment? One aspect of this is that students need to see ample career opportunities in their future. Many departments are most comfortable with preparing graduate students for the academy. What strategies can a department enact to better inform and prepare students for broad employment opportunities?

The popularity of MOOCs illustrates the student need for short online lectures with an embedded social network for peer-assistance. If done well, MOOCs could serve as "narrated and social textbooks" that could replace traditional lectures in class and free up valuable class time for individual or collaborative learning, facilitated by instructors. Do we have good means today to disseminate materials that instructors could use in class or students could use on their own to deepen the learning in MOOCs?
