Prosthetic Symposium: Successful Rehabilitation of the Upper Limb Amputee

Course Summary: 
This four hour presentation highlights prosthetic options and the key components of preprosthetic and postprosthetic management of the upper limb amputee. Participants will be guided through a prosthetic training protocol. Topics covered include prosthetic options, edema control, desensitization, mirror therapy, myosite testing and training, prepositioning/proportional control of the terminal device, and bimanual skills training. The partnership between the therapist and prosthetist will be highlighted as this is critical in providing a person with the most functional prosthesis. Therapists will participate in an interactive demonstration of myosite training and testing. 
 
Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to: 1) identify and implement the key components of preprosthetic and prosthetic training in the rehabilitation of the upper limb amputee; 2) discuss the importance of psychological support in the grieving process; 3) discuss prosthetic options and identify functional differences between electrically powered and body powered prostheses; 4) understand why communication between therapist and prosthetist is critical in providing the patient with the most functional prosthesis.

Attendees need to receive a certification and syllabus for their records. Up to 4 contact hours available for PT/PTA, OT/OTA, RN, and CM.
